Richard O'Neale Gaillard papers, 1917-1944.

Correspondence, receipts, photographs, and related materials documenting Gaillard's World War I military service with Co. A., 327th Battalion, Light Tanks, 1918-1919, stationed in Georgia, Pennsylvania, and France. Letters, 1918-1920, from family and friends in Columbia, S.C. and Greensboro, N.C., and parents A.S. and Mabel O'Neale Gaillard, sister Mary, aunt Daisy McSurley discuss local news and encourage Gaillard to travel in Europe as much as possible; letters from friends "Gus" Black, Nell Ray Spann, and others discuss college life; letter, 29 June 1918, from Nell Ray Spann discuss her work with the Red Cross; Spann and another female correspondent both lament that as women they cannot join the Army and contribute more to the war effort; letters detailing Gaillard's' student years at the University of South Carolina and his involvement in Sigma Nu fraternity, 1919-1921. Letters from subsequent years document Gaillard's employment in the cotton business at Palmetto Compress & Warehouse Co. (Columbia, S.C.), and as a co-founder of Carolina Bonded Storage Company; letters and schedules re his service with Columbia Auxiliary Police and as an air raid warden, 1942, during World War II; images in the collection include 6 photographs of Nell Ray Span, a World War I army tank, and unidentified persons; and 111 postcards of towns and buildings in France and soldiers and armaments in action, ca. 1918. Collection also contains 7 published booklets, some of which were distributed to world War I armed forces, including "Tank Tunes" (1918), and War Risk Insurance pamphlet (1920); Gaillard's personal copy of Thomas a Kempis', Of the Imitation of Christ; and printed text of a speech, "Every Man's Land," reproduced by the American Y.M.C.A., gives details of the trench line in Europe.

Augustine S. Gaylord was a prominent lawyer from Saginaw. He served in the state legislature and also as a U.S. attorny general. He was a legal member and advisor of a commission to treat with the Sioux Indians for the territory known as the Black Hills in Dakota. He also served as a Saginaw County clerk. He married Emeline E.
